Cool Denver Dust Devil

Yes, I hate iReport ... but this is still cool video. It almost looks anticyclonic to me -

I think that's probably the best defined, most violent (if that word can be used in this situation) looking dust devil I've ever seen photographed!

Weird, I was just watching another video of a dust devil earlier today and was thinking it looked anticyclonic also. It's not new though, it's from Burning Man in 2006. The video starts some distance away but the person recording kept the camera recording as they ran all the way to the base of the dust devil...

Is it just me or is it spinning the wrong way also?

Yeah, it's hard to tell without being closer whether it really is anticyclonic or not. It almost looks like it reverses direction a couple times - ha. After I watched this I had to google anticyclonic DDs, and it turns out they can go either way just like their big brothers.

Hey, I don't suppose that was from yesterday (August 5th), was it? We had an outflow boundary running perpendicular to the huge convergence zone that everything fired on yesterday and a TVS briefly showed up on GR2A. Aurora dispatch called me at the flood center saying people were reporting a tornado ... I thought it might be a landspout or a gustnado. Figured with the amount of "sightings" (KAPA tower also reported) that there would be some video, somewhere ... but I haven't seen it yet.

Dann - according to the iReport, it looks like this one occurred on Aug. 1st.

Here's an interesting tidbit from Navajo lore: "The Navajo refer to them as chiindii [dust devils], ghosts or spirits of dead Navajos. If a chindi spins clockwise it is said to be a good spirit; if it spins counterclockwise it is said to be a bad spirit."

Dust devils usually form on sunny days, so another interesting point about this one is the fairly dense cloud cover behind it. It does look like there is some direct sunlight coming from behind the photographer, though.

Hi Mike,
The first was a very hot day here in the Denver-metro area. I believe it touched 104ºF, just one degree shy of tying the all-time record. From what I recall (I could go look but I'm lazy), we did have some high-based convection over the mountains (which probably lead to the dark background).
